Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

We have a new category for 2024 called "AI Image or Video". If ANY part of your work was created using AI tools, your entry must be submitted under this category. AI-generated works submitted under other categories will be rejected.

Copyright Notice

No copyrighted material may be used in the projects. This includes but is not limited to cover songs, audio samples, imagery, and written text. We encourage members to search for royalty-free or Creative Commons music and imagery. Projects using copyrighted material will be disqualified.

Category Requirements

AI Image or Video

Work that uses artificial intelligence tools such as apps or platforms to help convey and idea. Media in this category must use AI to create visual art, an animation, a video, or 3D models. Members should conceptualize themes that are important to them when producing work in this category.

AI videos should be no longer than 2 minutes.

Documentary Video

Works that tell a story or share a perspective through the documentation of real life events, past or present. Projects for this category would be non-fiction videos exploring current or historical issues or pieces about a subject, person or persons.

Example: A World Without Words

Documentaries should be no longer than 6 minutes.

Narrative Video

A narrative video tells a fictional story, though it may be based on real life events or issues. Submissions should explore issues that are important to you and possibly present potential solutions for real change in your community.

Example: The Show Must Go On

Narratives should be no longer than 5 minutes.

Music Video

Music videos are visual interpretations of original youth-produced music, using original video footage tied to the themes and message of the lyrics. Content should explore issues that are important to you and your community.

Example: I am not alone

Music videos should be no longer than 5 minutes.

Public Service Announcement Video

Video work created with the objective of raising awareness and changing public
attitudes & behavior towards a social issue. Content should explore issues that are
important to you and your community. Think about creative approaches, treatment and subject matter.

Example: Food Insecurity

PSA's should be no longer than 3 minutes.

XR Media

XR, Cross Reality or Extended Reality, is a term for several different but related technologies. It rolls together VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality), and MR (mixed reality).

All XR media takes the human-to-PC screen interface and modifies it, either by 1) immersing you in the virtual environment (VR), 2) adds to, or augments, the user’s surroundings (AR), or 3) both of those (MR).

360 Video Steps

  1. You can either upload your video to this website, or you can upload it to YouTube or Vimeo. On the submission page, do one or the other: specify the link to your external video OR press the "Select File" button and upload your video.
  2. If you upload your 360 video using this website, please remember to check the "Selected file is VR Video" checkbox.
  3. When it's complete, test it to make sure it shows as a 360 video. If you have an updated YouTube app, you should be able to move your phone around and see in all directions—or if you are on a computer you should be able to click and drag to see the environment that you captured.

Animated Video

Works where the depiction of characters and settings is primarily in the form of hand-drawn or computer animation. For this category, you can use stop motion, hand-drawn, computer-generated, motion graphics, or a combination of formats. Submissions should explore issues that are important to you and present potential solutions for real change in your community.

Photography

Work that captures an emotion, condition, issue or beauty through a digital, film or quality cell phone camera. Think about creative angles, composition, lighting and the various genres of Photography (a few listed below) when shooting for this category.

Portrait

Work that captures the likeness of a person or a small group of people, in which the face and its expression is predominant.

Street Photography

Photos that feature subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions and other settings.

Culture and Daily Life

Photos that display the different cultures around the globe. But also the category to display images about the daily life of the family, people at work, ceremonies and rituals, etc.

Photojournalism

Images that tell a story, such as found in news media and periodicals. Photojournalism images include documentary, spot news, contemporary life, human interest and humor.

Visual Art

Visual art may be defined as any work that can be seen and interpreted. These pieces can be paintings, graphic design, or drawings that convey a message or an idea. Submissions should explore self expression and/or issues that are important to you. All entries should be original member-created artwork.

Music (Audio Only)

Composition—with lyrics or without—that includes social commentary, explore issues that are important to you and/or present potential solutions for real change in your community.

Podcasting

In the simplest terms, podcasting is a way to deliver audio to your audience. Whether it be a recording of a spoken word poem, a call to action or an interview with a mentor, podcasting is all about what YOU want it to be! This medium can be any length, any format, and on any topic. The purpose of the piece is to tell a story that connects with your audience.

Podcasts should be no longer than 5 minutes.

Scratch

Animation, stories, and games in which you use the Scratch coding program to create interactive personal statements or social commentary. Submissions should explore issues that are important to you and represent your perspective/genuine emotions.

After you have created a Scratch project, you will then create a video presentation to explain it. That video is what you will upload as your submission. It should include a recorded screen capture with voiceover, an interview of yourself explaining your project, or a slideshow (in video format) explaining the project.

This category will be judged on the quality, creativity and purpose behind your Scratch project, NOT necessarily the quality of the video.

Please remember to include a link to your Scratch project in your submission description.
