Description

Birch Eyes by Emma Verhaaren (aka Smokey Blue) is a commentary on social perception, judgement, and treatment based on outwards, uncontrollable traits, using birch trees as a metaphor for society in general, and their shadows as judgement, confusion, and fear. Further, this song explores using that emotion of fear and anxiety of perception by the public as a tool for motivation and performance. The lyricism recognizes the uncontrollable eyes of society, and recognizes that it is uncontrollable to stop it, so explores the idea of using that adrenaline from perception to benefit oneself instead. It also recognizes that ultimately, at the end of all things, the societal perception will have never mattered, which serves as a reason to take a positive spin on nervousness. The instrumentals represent the eerie, calming, and natural feeling that comes with being perceived, and ones perception of being perceived at that time. The instrumentals were made to adapt to each person's emotions, really able to be interpreted in any way the listener needs in that moment. Overall, the overarching theme of this song is that you can learn to take the fear of societal perception and use your attitude towards it as a fuel to achieve and perform.
